CVS
Corporation Awarded
Hire A Grownup© 2001

Stephen M. Wing, Director, Government Programs, and Michael
V. Ferdinandi,
Executive Vice President, Human Resources, receive the Hire A Grownup Award
2001 for CVS Corporation from 2young2retire co-founders Howard and Marika
Stone. Better than 15% of CVS Corporation's over 100,000 employees are 50
and
older, significantly higher than the national average.
On the occasion of the presentation of the Hire A
Grownup Award to CVS Corporation on August 6, 2001, Howard Stone made the following
remarks:
"It is a great
pleasure to be here today to present 2young2retire Initiative's first annual Hire A
Grownup award to CVS Corporation in recognition of its leadership in establishing a
workplace that is diverse, inclusive and aging-friendly.
"We acknowledge your commitment to increase the numbers of mature employees, by
recruiting, hiring, training, retaining and promoting people 50 and older. Through your
efforts, the representation of this cohort has grown in less than 10 years, from under 7
percent to 15 percent, well-above the national average. A leading restaurant chain
known for recruiting older workers achieved 7 percent. And at CVS, mature employees
are represented across the full spectrum of skills: from pharmacists and store managers to
entry level positions.
"As you may know, 2young2retire.com was founded in 1999 to advocate individual
renewal in the post-career life of people 50 and older. We have come to believe that the
maturity and skills of our cohort are not only an answer to predicted labor shortages and
many of the social problems of the future, but represent an enormous national asset we
cannot afford to ignore. The popularity of the site is evidence that we are not alone in
this conviction.
"The Hire A Grownup award was created to acknowledge companies and organizations
whose vision is consistent with that of 2young2retire Initiative. Hire A Grownup also
aspires to:
1. Take a stand against negative stereotyping of the 50 and older
cohort and age discrimination
2. Bring public attention to the benefits of a diverse, inclusive
workplace, and finally
3. To encourage the 50-plus population to recognize their own value in
the workplace, as intergenerational mentors and role models.
"Thank you CVS for being an outstanding model of corporate leadership for this
longevity revolution in the 21st Century!"
