Back to School It's not only business that will be hurting for warm bodies in the next decades. Many campuses are putting out a welcome mat for adult learners to fill up classrooms and making it easier to go back to school. Adult students are known for their motivation, perseverance, and wealth of life/work experience they bring to their studies. Continuing Education has a new face today, and remains an ideal way to get your feet wet or sample new subject matter with minimum risk or financial outlay. Can't make the geographic move or commit the time or money? No matter. Distance education -- courses, even work toward a degree -- on line, with email and other tools, offers many options at a competitive price. As always, check the school's credentials thoroughly and use common sense before sending any money. Beware of "degree mills" which give you a piece of paper as worthless as they are. How do you know on-line courses are right for you. If you answer 'yes' to most of the below, you are a candidate for distance education. Just remember that pursuing an education on-line can take as much time and effort as attending classes on campus. (Fuzzy slippers optional.)
The New School for Social Research (New York City) was founded in 1919 as a center for "discussion, instruction and counseling for mature men and women." It became America's first university for adults. Over the years, it grew into a major urban university made up of seven academic divisions, and in 1997, it was officially renamed New School University. New School University and its degree programs are fully accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middles States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Its credits and degrees are recognized and accepted by other accredited colleges, universities, and professional schools throughout the United States. New School University, a privately supported institution, is chartered as a university by the Regents of the State of New York. Online courses are a growing subset of more than 1,800 courses available each semester. Faculty all each in traditional classrooms as well, alternating between the online and campus. Catalog of other distance learning opportunities with website addresses and other information. There is a whole lot more available, and it changes frequently. Just type in "distance learning" into your search window. What can you do these days without computer skills? Fuhgedaboudit. Seniornet is an organization that is winning awards for helping the older student to stop procrastinating and learn to love their computer. Check out the site for locations near you. Continuing education, travel, enrichment. This is the mother of them all. Order a catalog, feast your eyes, and get your passport in order. Also their newest offering, Road Scholar, aimed at the Boomer generation. The Learning Annex If you live in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Toronto or a dozen other major cities, no doubt you've seen those little dispensing boxes on your corner. This is the new face of affordable, accessible, short-course continuing education with an emphasis on personal growth (lots of the big names on the circuit) and business and career opportunities. We've both sampled their offerings: Barbara Sher's workshop and some computer/internet courses. Can't beat the price! Also look for local rivals like Rhode Island's, The Learning Connection. Esalen, Omega Institute, Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health Personal growth and development is a growth industry. Here are three highly reputable centers we've visited personally where you can sample fascinating programs and excellent speakers. Most programs are week- or weekend-long, but both institutes offer longer stay programs and opportunities to serve. Esalen Institute, on California's Pacific Coast, gets the honors for the most beautiful location imaginable.
