Bulldog
Williams: Former Boxer
Creates Interview Programs
When Verne Bulldog Williams was a kid, he was smaller than his peers, sickly and
often the mark for schoolyard toughs. After seeing his kid knocked about more than once,
Vernes father, Wildcat, decided to teach the boy "the sweet science of boxing.
To everyones amazement, I was a natural boxer," Verne says.
At 13, Bulldog began to fight back and
soon developed a reputation as a scrapper -- a scrapper who could box. From them on
"I thought, ate and slept boxing." When he entered the Army at twenty, he won
the first Army Welterweight Title in 1956 (an Olympic year) and fought in the All Army
championships the same year in Ft. Meyer, Virginia. With an eye on the Olympics, he
continued to box as an amateur until the 1960 Olympic tryouts, when economics propelled
him to turn professional. "A few professional fights convinced me of the truth of the
old cliche: Amateur boxing is for glory and professional boxing is for blood."
Today, Bulldog Williams, now an
announcer with a long list of television voice-over commercial credits to his name, has
married his first love, boxing, to his current vocation. The result is "Bulldog
Williams -- Boxings Best Friend" a collection of interviews that
"humanizes the sport through personal interviews with boxing professionals."
More recently, he has turned to another passion -- jazz -- for a new series
of one-on-one conversations. The first of these is with Phil Woods,
saxophone great, recorded at Delaware Water Gap in February. A second
interview was with jazz DJ, Mort Fega.
Youve probably heard BullDog's
warm baritone behind numerous television spots. Tthe boxing interviews debuted on
the college circuit in the Northeast.
Now you can purchase
Bulldog Williams brand clothing and hear and purchase CDs of Bulldog
Williams interviews with the sports and jazz greats of our generation.
