Downsized Boomer Makes Comeback as Entrepreneur

                                    by Paul J. Hindelang

Suppose you are a 54 year old business veteran, with an MBA and 31 years of experience, most recently as manager of finance for a major corporation. You have built a respectable career, chaired your share of committees at various professional and community organizations, grown your family. You might imagine, as did Carl Ammaccapane whose story this is, that you've done all the right things. Then, you get downsized.

Carl knew he needed to begin exploring options for his next phase of life, yet he had not been able to find the energy and interest to seek a new “career after downsizing.” Although he was pursuing studies at Sacred Heart Major Seminary for deacon ordination, the career downsizing left him “anxious and unfulfilled,” and feeling that he “ought to be working...like everybody else.”

Carl and I met at SHMS, where I also pursue a course of study, and we struck up a friendship. I know something about transition myself, personally and professionally. With B.S. Engineering and an MS. Human Resources, I have spent a career in the field of quality improvement and leadership consulting. As an executive coach, I assist business owners as they seek higher levels of accomplishment in their personal and business life.

What intrigued Carl and was relevant to his situation was my expanded work as a 2young2retire Certified Facilitator. As a downsized executive, Carl was an ideal client to gain advantage of my new training and services. I introduced Carl to the book used for the program, Too Young to Retire: 101 Ways to Start the Rest of Your Life by Marika and Howard Stone, and offered to coach him in his transition. Carl was game and quickly began his journey.

As he worked with the ideas and exercises from the book and its Journal of Transition, Carl felt renewed enthusiasm for “pushing ahead.” The concepts of renewal and reinvention “spoke to him.” He was especially drawn to the chapter on 101 Opportunities for the Open Minded. This expansive list of ideas helped him get clearer about what he really wanted to do. He identified a dozen or so possibilities and he found a common thread among them. He now saw that his future would include writing, teaching, speaking, leading, and managing; all skills he held and could translate into a next endeavor.

Fired Up

By our third meeting, “the fire on the rocket was lit.” Carl prepared his resume which reflected his new image and vision for the future. He met with another business consultant to evaluate entrepreneurial businesses and franchises. He and his wife scheduled a trip to evaluate a management consulting practice. He envisioned a business in leadership development that could involve his wife on some level and complement his commitment to pastoral ministry.

Carl found what he was looking for in a franchise opportunity with The Alternate Board® (TAB), an international membership organization of thousands of CEOs, presidents, business owners and partners worldwide who are dedicated to improving their businesses. TAB organizes board groups of non-competing companies who collectively share their hundreds of years of business experience.

Carl purchased the area franchise and has completed training as a TAB Certified Facilitator. His marketing plans have been implemented and he is again experiencing the fulfillment of “working again”; but this time as the owner of his own consulting services firm insulated from the downsizing actions of Corporate America. Carl said recently: “This is so much more than finding another job. I am going to make a much larger and broader contribution to myself, my spouse, family, and church in these new years of reinvention than I could have ever imagined.”

Amen to that.
