Danny (Danielle) Bernstein: Avid Hiker and Former
Computer Scientist Turns to Outdoor Writing

"Life is short; make time for adventure," is Danny Bernstein’s motto. Danny is an avid hiker and hike leader for the Carolina Mountain Club, in Asheville, North Carolina. She has led day hikes, week-end trips, and long vacation trips as a volunteer for outdoor groups, including excursions to the Smokies, Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, Mt. Greylock in Massachusetts and several trips to Colorado and the Canadian Rockies. She has also hiked overseas, including Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

But now, she’s also an outdoor writer. "I write outdoor and hiking articles for regional newspapers and magazines. I wrote for free for three years before I got paid for an article. I’ve also written my first guidebook, Hiking the Carolina Mountains published by Milestone Press. A second guidebook will be out April 2009. Writing and working on getting published is very humbling. I take writing and history courses. I network with other writers, joined the North Carolina Writers Conference, and had to learn how to market my books. Writing and publishing is only half the work – marketing is the second half. I am an apprentice all over again.”

Before moving to Asheville and writing non-fiction, my skills were always in great demand. I was in computing for over 30 years, starting before computing was cool. First I did software development and database work on mainframe computers for Bell Labs. Then I switched to academia and taught computer science. At that time, I considered that going from for a large company to a university environment was a major change. I got a Ph.D. in Information Science and worked up the tenure track ladder. I loved academia. Teaching, doing research and mentoring young people were the most important goals in my life. I got great satisfaction from explaining programming concepts to students who felt that programming was beyond them. I also had two outstanding sabbatical leaves to New Zealand, a hiker’s paradise.”

My mission in life right now is to get people hiking, out of their cars and into the woods. Contrary to popular belief, the trails, even in the East, are not crowded. Roads and visitor centers are crowded but go out more than two miles from your car, add a little climbing and there’s almost no one on the trails.”

"As serious as I am about writing, I never forget that I left academia to hike. I moved to the Blue Ridge mountains to hike and that’s what I do, several times a week. My husband and I have been hiking since our twenties. We finished the Appalachian Trail in sections over many years and other hiking challenges in the North. When we retired and moved to the Appalachian Mountains, my dream was to lead hiking trips full-time. However, I was doing more marketing than hiking and it wasn’t satisfying. I closed the business down, changed the website to an informational site for hikers coming to the Southern Appalachians, and started writing about the outdoors. But most important to me, I keep on hiking.”
